Exploring treatment options for rotator cuff disorders
نویسنده
چکیده
Successful management of rotator cuff disorders requires a diagnostic and treatment algorithm that takes comorbidities into consideration. Within a framework of the patient’s age, the tear size, the injury mechanism, chronicity, and muscle atrophy/fatty infiltration, the overall risk of irreversible changes to the cuff with continued nonoperative treatment is weighed against the potential for improvement. Nonoperative treatment methods include corticosteroid injections, oral anti-inflammatory medication, activity modification, ultrasonography and phonophoresis, and rehabilitation. Surgical management of rotator cuff injuries starts with a thorough diagnostic arthroscopy of the entire glenohumeral joint and subacromial space. Postoperative rehabilitation is conducted in 3 phases. The major postoperative complication is failure of the tendon to heal. Rotator cuff tear size has an important effect on clinical outcomes after repair. Management options for massive rotator cuff tears are numerous, and selection of the most appropriate treatment method for individual patients can be a challenge. An understanding of the pathomechanics, treatment, and clinical outcomes in patients with massive rotator cuff tears can serve as a guide for clinical d...
متن کاملIs Arthroscopic Debridement an Effective Treatment Option for Rotator Cuff Arthropathy?
Rotator cuff arthropathy is often associated with disabling pain and shoulder dysfunction. When non operative treatment options have failed, reverse shoulder replacement is usually indicated. Alternative treatment options may be prudent in younger patients, those with multiple co morbidities compromising surgical options, or those unable to comply with postoperative rehabilitation. There is lit...
متن کاملCurrent Treatment Options for Rotator Cuff Tears
Accounting for more than 4.5 million physician visits and 250,000 surgeries per year, rotator cuff injuries are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries in the United States [2, 3]. The cost per rotator cuff repair has been estimated as 15,306 US-dollars, resulting in an annual societal burden of almost 4 billion US-dollars in the United States [3]. With the growing number of rotator cuff...

OBJECTIVE. The management of patients with signs and symptoms referable to the rotator cuff depends on the presence of cuff injury and the size of the tear. Treatment options include conservative nonsurgical management for patients with an intact or partially tom cuff, arthroscopic decompression of the coracoacromlal space for those not responding to nonsurgical management, and a range of surgi...
